Therapeutic / Holistic Massage

History

This original western Swedish style of massage involves the manipulation of the soft body tissue, particularly muscles, involving a sequence of movements working superficially and deeper into the tissue layers. Holistic comes from the Greek “holos”, meaning whole, as the Holistic treatment hopes to treat the physical, mental and spiritual aspect of an individual.

How does this style of massage work?

Swedish massage is made up of the following four massage techniques

Effleurage (stroking) involves working the palm of the hand over the skin to warm the skin and is relaxing.

Petrissage (pressing/squeezing) helps to relieve tension and break up adhesions promoting deep relaxation in the tissues and muscles.

Tapotement (striking) stimulates nerve endings and tones the muscle fibres.

Vibrations relax muscles, clear nerve pathways and stimulate nerves.

As no two people are alike, the body massage sequence will be adapted to the client's needs combining the above techniques to create different types of massage, from soothing to invigorating or, a combination of the two.

This style of massage takes place on a massage couch, unless a seated massage is required; clients are asked to wear briefs and towels are used to maintain client privacy, exposing only the areas being treated. Various massage mediums are available from creams to oils.

Treatment times are variable e.g. 30 minutes, this would allow enough time for a partial massage session e.g. face, neck and shoulders or back or legs and feet, to a maximum of 90 minutes which would allow for a full body treatment and optimal relaxation.
