Reflexology
Reflexology is a complementary therapy widely accepted and recognised by the NHS and hospices. It is based on a very ancient form of foot therapy practised in Egypt, China and India and has stood the test of time.
It is a compression therapy that treats the feet (or hands) in order to stimulate the body’s own self- healing mechanisms. It is a non-invasive, holistic treatment so takes into account the whole person – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Reflexes or locations on the feet correspond to all organs and tissues of the body. By pressing on these reflex points the corresponding parts in the body are treated. It is an energy therapy so aims to clear energy blockages so that health can be restored.
Reflexology is not massage in the strictest sense but some of the sensations are exactly the same so if you like having your feet touched then this could be the therapy for you. Reflexology is a wonderful relaxation therapy as well as being a preventative treatment. A reflexologist does not diagnose illness but the treatment does act as a complement to standard medical treatment.
Who can benefit from reflexology?

How many treatments are required?
This depends on the reasons for treatment and varies accordingly. Some patients come for once-weekly treatments for 4-6 weeks and then one a month as a ‘top-up’. Others find that Reflexology is so relaxing, enjoyable and beneficial to overall health so choose to continue with weekly treatments as their dedicated ‘me’ time.
What to expect?
Prior to your first treatment your reflexologist will fill in a consultation form with you to get a picture of your state of health and what you would like from the treatment. Your treatment plan can then be customised to meet your needs. The first session lasts approximately 1.5 hours followed by further treatments of 1 hour.
Treatment usually takes place on a couch. You should wear loose comfortable clothing so that you can relax. You will need to remove all footwear for foot reflexology. It is advisable to have a very light meal an hour or two before treatment and be able to relax after the treatment. You should avoid alcohol on the day of treatment and drink plenty of water particularly after your treatment so that toxins are flushed out of your system.
In the first treatment the wonderful sensation of touch may be the main sensation. In subsequent treatments you may be aware of increased sensitivity as the reflexes are ‘awakened’. You may feel needling sensations or tender spots on your feet. It should not be painful. Relaxation is key to self-healing so tell your reflexologist if this occurs. The area can then be worked in different ways.
Brief notes are made after each treatment and aftercare advice offered. The service is confidential and this will be discussed in your first meeting.
Please ring the Clinic on the Green if you would like to discuss anything further regarding our Reflexology treatments.
