Indian Head Massage
History
This form of Ayurvedic massage has been used for centuries in India and was traditionally practised in families to encourage healthy hair growth and as a way of relieving the body of fatigue. Its Indian name is “champissage”, from which the word shampoo has evolved. Ayurveda translates as “science of life”, and is the term used to encompass the various strands of the Indian medical system from medical science, herbal remedies, massage, yoga and meditation.
How does Indian Head Massage work?
Indian Head Massage is carried out with the client in a seated position, although it is possible to perform some elements whilst the client is lying down. The treatment focuses on the upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face areas. The treatment can be carried out over clothes, without oils or with oils. If oils are being used only the shoulders are left bare.
Ayurvedic oils are also available such as Amla, Bhringraj, Brahmi, Coconut, Shikakai, Mustard, Neem, Pumpkin, and Sesame and can provide relief from various complaints e.g. itchy scalp, poor hair growth, to overactive mind, and insomnia to name but a few, when they are applied to the scalp during the treatment. Leaving these oils on overnight will maximise their beneficial properties allowing them to absorb fully into the hair and scalp.
Indian Head Massage combines different massage techniques that will both soothe and stimulate the nervous system and are aimed to create a relaxing and balancing treatment.
