Hopi Ear Candling
The history of Hopi Ear candles.
The name Hopi ear candles is taken from the Native American tribe of Hopi Indians who introduced this gentle therapy to the west. However it is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. It has been used by the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. There are ancient wall paintings such as those found in the caves of the Grand Canyon showing the importance of ear candles in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies of the Hopi Indians.
How do Hopi Ear candles work?
The ear candle is not a candle as such but a hollow tube usually made out of organically grown flax, beeswax, extracts of honey and herbs, and a constant high quality is ensured.
When the ear candle is lit and placed in the ear a slight sucking action referred to as the chimney effect draws any impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed.
The rising air inside the ear sets up a vibration which gently massages the ear drum. This can help to soften the wax and draw it up to the surface and can help equalise ear pressure. Most impurities or deposits are carried away through the candle “chimney”, although some can be found in the lower section of the candle after removal from the ear. Some wax may even work its way to the surface up to 48 hours afterwards.

What does a Hopi Ear candle treatment involve?
The treatment begins with a consultation then you will be asked to lie on your back on the treatment couch and certain pressure points on your face will be stimulated. This helps to relax the facial muscles, increase circulation and help drain the sinuses. You will then be asked to lie on your side and a candle will be lit and gently placed in your ear. When the candle has burned down it is gently removed from your ear. The process is then repeated in the other ear. You will then receive a facial massage which pays particular attention to the sinus areas. The treatment is very relaxing.
