Bowen Technique
Where did Bowen originate?
The Bowen technique was developed by Tom Bowen he was born in 1916 in Geelong Australia and died in 1982.
He became interested in ways of alleviating human suffering and noticed that when he made certain moves on areas of the body it had particular effects. Bowen was first brought to this country in the early 1990’s.
What is Bowen?
Bowen is a treatment that enables the body to reset and heal itself, often resulting in pain relief and a feeling of energy; there is no manipulation or force used.
The Bowen practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points on the body to make small, gentle, rolling movements over muscles and ligaments. The aim is to disturb the muscles and soft tissue. This is interspersed with periods of rest of about 2 minutes. This allows the body to absorb the moves and make subtle adjustments. The healing process is initiated, causing the body to realign itself, thus relieving tension and reducing pain.
What conditions can Bowen help?
Bowen is very effective for muscular-skeletal problems but can also help with a wide range of other conditions such as;
- headaches and migraines
- tinnitus
- jaw problems
- whiplash, neck pain
- respiratory problems
- tennis elbow
- carpal tunnel/RSI
- digestive disorders
- pregnancy and fertility problems
- menstrual problems
- sciatica
- knee, ankle and foot problems
Bowen can also be very beneficial for children with special needs for example;
- Cerebral Palsy
- Dyspraxia
- Autism
- Asperger’s syndrome
What does a Bowen treatment involve?
On your first visit a detailed medical history will be taken. You will then be asked to lie on the treatment couch while the therapist performs the moves on the body interspersed with resting periods. This can be done through light clothing, but it is more helpful to work on bare skin. You will be covered by a blanket and only the areas being worked on are exposed.
How long will a session take?
A Bowen session lasts between 30- 45 minutes depending on the problem, with an additional 15minutes consultation before the first session.
How many sessions will I need?
Three to four sessions may be enough depending on the nature of the problem. It may take more if the condition is long standing.
How much will each Bowen session cost?
A session costs £30.
